Adel Hockey Club is the largest and longest established hockey club in Leeds. Based at the Adel War Memorial Association on Church Lane, the club’s ethos is to provide an amazing hockey experience for all.
The club is well-known for its community atmosphere, with a strong volunteer ethos – over 200 of its 500+ members regularly pitching in to benefit the wider club. Due to this, its all-inclusive membership fees offer exceptional value for the sheer amount of hockey on offer – with no hidden charges!
Unlike many other local clubs, they own their own facilities – a modern pitch with LED floodlighting, and an on-site bustling clubhouse and bar with additional training and event rooms. It sits within the beautiful Adel St John Conservation Area and is part of a multi-sport facility with over 2,500 members that is active 365 days a year.
Adel boasts fourteen Saturday league teams – six women’s, six men’s and two development teams. These two development teams are unique to the city and offer an opportunity for young players aged 10 – 14 to play weekly 11-a-side hockey with a small number of experienced adult players to aid their transition to senior teams and encourage them to become lifelong hockey players.
In addition to this, the club runs the region’s largest summer league – with matches taking place over 14 weeks of competition every weekday from April to July. It has a thriving junior academy – with a range of teams playing from the highest standard of competition nationally in the England Hockey Junior Super League to local and regional development fixtures; from Under 8s to Under 16s.

Masters, Indoor, Mixed and Back to Hockey sessions make up the remainder of its hockey – offering something for all. Players in recent years have represented national and regional teams in masters, mixed and junior competitions – with these players ranging from 10 to 80+ with Ian Phillips and David Margerison recently representing a Celtic Over 80s team at the 2026 Masters World Cup in Breda, Netherlands.
But it doesn’t stop on the pitch – Adel is renowned for its social scene and particularly popular with young people who have moved to the area or just finished university. Many of those stay and have kids themselves – who often become eager hockey players in their own right!
Adel is ambitious with its aims including targeting national league hockey for its men’s and women’s teams, and in continuing to develop its own facilities. This includes a new pitch-side changing and club facility that is due to start being built imminently. However, as it continues to develop, it is committed to retaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere – where each member feels as though they are a valued part of the Adel family.
