St George’s Day in Morley

With St George’s Day just around the corner, Morley is once again preparing to host its much‑loved St George’s Day Parade and Gala – an annual highlight that brings the whole town together. For more than 20 years, this celebration has drawn visitors from across the country and earned its reputation as one of the largest and most vibrant St George’s Day events in the North of England. In fact, many locals would say – quite confidently – that Morley does St George’s Day better than anywhere else, and this year’s line‑up certainly puts that friendly challenge to the rest of the country.

Organised by the Morley branch of the Royal Society of St George (RSSG), and supported by Morley Town Council alongside generous benefactors and dignitaries, the day promises a lively blend of tradition, pageantry, and community spirit that continues to make Morley shine.

The festivities begin with the superb large parade, which sets off from outside Morley Town Hall at 11.30am on Sunday 26th April. St George on horseback will lead the procession, creating a striking opening to the event, followed closely by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue brass band whose rousing music always lifts the atmosphere. Behind them, a colourful and energetic mix of youth groups will proudly march, including Rainbows, Brownies, Girl Guides, Cubs, Scouts, Rangers, Air Cadets, and sports groups such as Morley Rugby Club and Morley Knights Rugby Club. Their participation showcases the strength, diversity, and enthusiasm of Morley’s young people, who remain at the heart of this celebration.

Adding a historical dimension, WWII military vehicles and reenactors will join the parade, accompanied by members of the British Legion under the direction of Parade Marshall John Huck. This combination of heritage, youth, and ceremonial tradition creates a spectacle that draws spectators year after year. Many attendees gather at the Town Hall to watch the parade set off before following the route up Queensway, across Corporation Street, and along Scatcherd Lane into Morley Rugby Club, where the next stage of the day unfolds.

Upon arrival at the rugby club, the crowd will gather for the Ceremonial Affirmation and Official Opening. Dignitaries representing King Charles will oversee the affirmations made by young people from Morley’s various youth organisations – a moment that reinforces values of duty, pride, and patriotism, and remains one of the most meaningful parts of the day. Once the ceremony concludes, the event opens fully, inviting visitors to explore the entertainment, displays, stalls, refreshments, and rides spread across both Morley Rugby Club and Morley Cricket Club grounds.

This year’s programme promises plenty to enjoy for all ages. Fairground rides will be available on both sites, alongside a wide variety of food stalls and vendor booths, including contributions from local charities. St John’s Ambulance will be on hand providing free first aid cover and offering demonstrations throughout the afternoon. And adding an extra layer of excitement, the ever‑popular Knights of Nottingham will return to entertain Morley with their dynamic, crowd‑pleasing performances. Renowned for their high‑energy displays and theatrical flair, they are always a highlight and are sure to draw enthusiastic audiences once again.
