Getting Clean

In June, the Oakwood Women’s Institute (WI) had the pleasure of welcoming Chris, the founder of Getting Clean, along with some dedicated volunteers from the organisation. Their stories were deeply moving, and the mission of this Community Interest Company (CIC) is something that deserves wider recognition. The atmosphere in the church hall was delightful, filled with the fragrant aroma of their handcrafted soaps. Attendees left with lovely soaps and a few even adopted “recovery roosters,” a unique initiative of the organisation.

Getting Clean began as a Leeds volunteer project initiated by individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Their goal was to support one another and the local community in achieving and maintaining sobriety through peer-to-peer support and engaging activities. Over time, this project evolved into a not-for-profit company, expanding its impact and reach.

One of the standout initiatives of Getting Clean is their “Soap with Hope” program. In this program, recovering addicts participate in therapeutic soap-making workshops. The soaps they create are not only of high quality but also carry a profound message of hope and recovery. The proceeds from soap sales are reinvested into the organisation to further their key objectives:

  1. Supporting individuals in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
  2. Creating a cleaner and greener local community.
  3. Providing volunteers with pathways to employment.
  4. Promoting environmentalism and sustainability.
  5. Advocating for abstinence-based recovery.
  6. Changing the public perception of addiction.

Getting Clean is about more than just overcoming substance abuse; it encompasses a broader philosophy of cleanliness and renewal. The organisation extends the principles of addiction recovery to environmental issues, illustrating how the therapeutic process of “getting clean” can apply to our bodies, minds, streets, and communities.

In addition to soap-making, Getting Clean continues its regular volunteer projects. These include community clean-ups, conservation efforts, and residential repair jobs for vulnerable citizens. These activities not only improve the local environment but also provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment for the volunteers, reinforcing their recovery journey.

Education and inspiration are central to Getting Clean’s mission. They aim to encourage all community members to adopt cleaner and more sustainable lifestyles. This could mean something as simple as recycling plastic or as profound as committing to sobriety. Through their diverse activities and initiatives, Getting Clean seeks to foster a culture of care and responsibility towards both personal health and the environment.

The impact of Getting Clean is multifaceted. For individuals in recovery, it provides a supportive community and meaningful activities that aid in their journey towards sobriety. For the broader community, it offers practical benefits like cleaner streets and repaired homes, along with the broader cultural shift towards sustainability and environmental consciousness.

The heartwarming stories shared by Chris and the volunteers at the Oakwood WI event highlighted the transformative power of Getting Clean. Their dedication and innovative approach to recovery and community service are truly inspiring. By buying their soaps or participating in their initiatives, people can contribute to a cause that not only helps individuals rebuild their lives but also enhances the community and environment as a whole.

Getting Clean is a shining example of how recovery and environmentalism can intersect to create a positive, lasting impact. Their holistic approach to “getting clean” addresses both personal and communal well-being, making them a valuable asset to any community. The Oakwood WI’s experience with Getting Clean serves as a testament to the organisation’s profound influence and the potential for growth and support in other areas.

The soaps which I purchased on the day smell so good, and I encourage you to buy some either via the website or whenever you see them at a local market. You won’t just be getting clean, you will be smelling and feeling amazing too.
